Members of the Coal Association of Canada are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Bernd Martens, P. Biol. at the age of 69 from complications following routine surgery in Calgary, Alberta on November 16, 2018. Bernd worked in the Canadian coal industry for close to 40 years in various consulting, management and advocacy roles. Bernd started his career as a Wildlife Biologist and was most recently employed as Director, Environmental and Regulatory Affairs with Grande Cache Coal Corporation. Bernd also worked with other coal mining companies for many years including Manalta Coal and Smoky River Coal. Bernd’s contributions to environmental planning, reclamation, environmental policy and Aboriginal relations amongst many other initiatives have left a positive mark on the coal industry as a whole. He will be sorely missed and fondly remembered. Bernd is survived by his brother, Frank, sister, Ursula and nephew, Cameron. A service for friends and colleagues to celebrate his life will be held in mid-January in Calgary.
